- GemPlus ST - A Desktop Extension Package
-
- Anyone who has used the ST GEM desktop for any length of time
- will know that although it has its drawbacks, it is a very good way to
- communicate with the ST operating system. However, there are several
- different types of desktop on several different computers, from the
- oldest on the MAC up to one of the latest on the Archimedes. These
- two desktop programs both have one major advantage over the ST desktop,
- and this is the ability for the user to change the various icons, and
- add icons of his/her own design.
- The ST desktop has pre-set icons for the disk drives and also
- three different icons for the files, these being the folder icon, the
- executeable program (.PRG,.TOS etc) icon and finally one icon for all
- the other files. This makes it very difficult to distinguish between
- files when you have a window with several files all with the same icon.
- GemPlus is therefore a program to allow the user to both change
- the disk drive icons and design icons to attach them to folders and
- files on a disk. The package includes three programs. One is the actual
- GemPlus program, and the other two are for designing the disk and file
- icons respectively.
-
- Getting started....
-
- In order to work properly, the GEMPLUS.PRG file should be placed
- in an AUTO folder so that it will auto-boot from the disk. If the user
- has any disk icons stored in a DISK.DEF file, then this file should also
- be placed in the AUTO folder, and GemPlus will automatically load them.
- Once booted, GemPlus will work in the background. When any disk is
- inserted and catalogued, GemPlus will look on the root directory of that
- disk for a file called ICON.DEF. If such a file is found, then it will
- be loaded and the icons in that file used instead of the normal GEM
- desktop icons.
- Note: If the DISK.DEF file is not placed in the AUTO folder, or
- the ICON.DEF file is not placed in the root directory (ie. not in any
- in folder) then GemPlus will not be able to find them.
-
- Creating the icons....
-
- To create your icons, there is a program called ICONEDIT.PRG
- This is a program to create the disk icons and file icons. When first
- loaded, you will be asked if you want to create file icons or the
- disk icons. Simply press 'F' for file icons or 'D' for disk icons.
- The program will only work in medium resolution, so those who are
- high resolution users will have to use a T.V. or colour monitor to
- actually create the icons. However, once created, the icons will work
- perfectly in high resolution.
-
- Disk icons and file icons.....
-
- There are two types of icons GemPlus can use, these being disk
- icons and file icons.
-
- Disk icons are used on the desktop for the connected disk drives,
- and GEM uses just one standard icon. However, if the user wanted to have
- a different icon for the hard-disk, drive C then this can be done with
- the DISKS.TOS program. Disk icons have three variables. These are the
- device letter of the disk drive (eg. 'A') and the X and Y co-ordinates
- of the letter on the icon. To create such an icon, click on the CREATE
- box, and enter the device letter. The icon can then be drawn. To move
- to letter about, click on the '+' or '-' boxes next to X and Y. To
- change the device letter, click on CHANGE and re-enter the device
- letter.
-
- File icons come in three different types. The first is the
- EXTENSION type. This allows the user to enter an extension of up to
- three letters. If a file is found on the disk with this extension, then
- this icon is used. The second is a specific filename, and if the file
- with this filename is found on the disk, then again this icon is used.
- Finally, there is the folder type, where the name of a folder is entered
- and if a folder with this name is found then this icon is used. To
- create such an icon, click on the CREATE box next to one of the types,
- either EXTENSION, FILE or FOLDER and then enter the extension/filename or
- folder name as instructed. To change an icon to a different type, click
- on the CHANGE box next to the new type, and enter the new name.
-
- Drawing the icons......
-
- Apart from the above, the file and disk icons are drawn in the
- same way. There are several operations which can be carried out by the
- program, and these are listed below.....
-
- LOAD - First select the correct disk drive in the DRIVE box and then
- click on LOAD. If you enter 'Y' at the prompt, then the file from that
- drive will be loaded. The DISKS.TOS program will look in the AUTO folder
- for a file called DISK.DEF, whilst the ICONS.TOS program will look on
- the root directory of that disk for a file called ICON.DEF.
-
- SAVE - Select the disk drive and press 'Y' at the prompt. The programs
- will save the files in the same format as described above.
-
- EXIT - Exit from the program.
-
- CLEAR - Will clear the current icon being worked on.
-
- INVERT - Will invert the current icon.
-
- H-FLIP - Will perform a horizontal flip on the current icon.
-
- V-FLIP - Will perform a vertical flip on the current icon.
-
- COLOUR - The colour (White or Black) can be selected by clicking on
- the colour in the colour box.
-
- SCROLL - The icon can be scrolled in any of four directions by clicking
- on the arrow boxes in the scroll box.
-
- SELECT - Any icon can be selected to work on by clicking on the picture
- of the icon with the LEFT mouse button.
-
- COPY - Any icon can be copied onto the current icon by clicking on the
- icon with the RIGHT mouse button.
-
-
- DELETE - Will delete the current icon completely.
-
-

- There you have it, and in no time you can have all your disks
- customised to your liking. I think you will agree that it makes things
- a lot clearer on the desktop and therefore the desktop becomes much
- quicker and easier to use.
